Mid 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Hanging Corner Cupboard C.1750 Wall Cabinet

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

This is an attractive mid eighteenth-century Georgian mahogany hanging corner cupboard, dating from around 1750.

Constructed in richly coloured mahogany, the cupboard features a moulded cornice above a single arched fielded panel door, flanked by finely fluted canted corners terminating in carved spiral roundels. The interior is fitted with shaped corner shelves, providing useful storage while displaying the practical craftsmanship associated with the Georgian period.

The restrained architectural design and pleasing proportions make this an exceptionally versatile piece, equally suited to a period interior or as a characterful accent within a more contemporary setting. The warm mahogany colour and honest patina acquired over nearly three centuries further enhance its decorative appeal.

A handsome and increasingly difficult-to-find Georgian hanging corner cupboard of practical size.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-18th century Georgian corner cupboards are defined by classical proportions, rich mahogany timber, and architectural details such as arched panel doors, moulded cornices, and fluted pilasters designed to fit neatly into room corners.

These cabinets were primarily built using dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany for visible exterior surfaces, with secondary woods like pine or oak used for interior shelving and backing panels, fitted with cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons, natural shrinkage marks around panel joints, and uneven wear consistent with period age.

A hanging corner cupboard can be mounted in an underutilised corner of a dining room, hallway, or study to provide space-saving storage while adding warm timber tones to contemporary schemes.

Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth is recommended, alongside light applications of natural beeswax once or twice a year to preserve the original finish, keeping the piece away from direct radiator heat.
