This very handsome and superb quality pair of late 19th C. bronze lions at rest are mounted on an unadorned rectangular plinth. They are both very well detailed and are a substantial weight for their size. The pair would make wonderful accent pieces for display or bookends, in a wide range of rooms and settings, both contemporary or traditional.

The Animalier movement emerged prominently in 19th-century France and Britain, specialising in realistic depictions of animals. Sculptors focused on anatomical accuracy and naturalistic poses, popularising bronze animal figures for residential libraries, mantlepieces, and studies.

These figures were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, then hand-chased to refine detail. They were typically given an oxidised chemical patina and mounted onto solid slate, marble, or bronze plinths.
