Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, taking powdered tobacco was a widespread social custom among European gentry. Sterling silver snuff boxes served as functional personal accessories and status symbols, crafted by silversmiths with detailed hand-engraving, chasing, and gilding.

Georgian silversmiths constructed boxes using high-purity sterling silver (92.5% silver content), forming the shape by hand-hammering and soldering rolled sheet metal. Intricate scrollwork, crests, and floral motifs were applied using specialized hand-engraving tools, while flush-fitting hinges were fitted to ensure an airtight seal.

Authentic British sterling silver from this era features a set of official assay marks stamped into the metal. These typically include the lion passant for sterling purity, a town mark (such as the leopards head for London), a date letter indicating the exact year of manufacture, a duty mark depicting the ruling monarchs profile, and the makers initials.

A compact antique silver box can be styled as a refined accent piece on an office desk, coffee table tray, or vanity unit. It functions well as a receptacle for small items such as cufflinks or paperclips, introducing historic texture and metallic contrast to modern schemes.

Antique silver should be wiped gently with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth and polished using a specialized, non-abrasive silver foam or cloth when oxidisation occurs. Avoid dipping solutions that remove natural patina from engraved recesses, and store the item in a low-humidity environment away from rubber materials.
