Georgian Mahogany Hanging Corner Cupboard with Drawer & Keys C.1800

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome late Georgian mahogany hanging corner cupboard dating from the early nineteenth century. Constructed in solid mahogany rather than veneered timber, it combines restrained Georgian proportions with practical storage and a rich, well-developed patina.

The moulded cornice sits above a single arched fielded-panel door enclosing a shelved interior retaining traces of its original baize lining. Beneath is a useful single drawer, making the cupboard equally suitable for use in a kitchen, dining room, hallway or study.

Unlike many comparable examples, this cupboard is constructed from solid mahogany throughout, reflecting the quality of its manufacture. It retains working locks to both the cupboard door and drawer, each with its key, and displays the warm colour and mellow surface expected of well-preserved Georgian furniture.

A practical and decorative example of an increasingly sought-after form of early English furniture.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 88cm

Width: 72cm

Depth: 51cm

CONDITION

There are the expected marks, scratches and surface wear commensurate with age and use. A small section of moulding to the right-hand return of the cornice has been professionally replaced and blended sympathetically into the surrounding timber. The cupboard door lock is a historic replacement. Both the cupboard and drawer retain working locks with keys. Overall, the cupboard is solid, structurally sound and presented in very good antique condition.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian hanging corner cupboard is a wall-mounted storage cabinet produced during the reign of the Georgian monarchs (17141830). Designed to fit securely into a corner, these cabinets typically featured solid timber construction, panelled doors, and brass fittings to store items securely off the floor.

Primary woods commonly included high-grade mahogany, oak, or walnut, often lined with secondary woods such as pine or deal. Hardware generally consisted of cast brass H-hinges, brass escutcheon keyholes, and hand-cut steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular saw marks on the reverse, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original hand-cast brass H-hinges, and fielded or arched panel doors appropriate to the eighteenth century.

Mount the cupboard at eye level in an underutilised dining room, hallway, or bathroom corner to introduce vertical interest and architectural character. It serves as functional storage for glassware, linens, or small collectibles without consuming floor space.

Clean the timber surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer cracking.
