Large Antique Inlaid Mahogany Console Table

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressive and incredibly well made large antique inlaid mahogany console table. It is in the Georgian style, it was made in England and dates from around the 1920-30’s.

This is of outstanding quality, the mahogany has lovely grain patterns and the satin wood inlays compliment it beautifully. The drawers have solid oak construction inside, with fine, hand cut dovetailed joints and lovely brass handles. This sits on finely tapered legs that terminate in spade feet, the top has cross banded edges.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian console tables, popular throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, feature balanced proportions, clean lines, and detailed woodwork. Designers such as Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite introduced slender tapered legs, intricate string inlay, and breakfront profiles to complement formal hallways and reception rooms.

High-grade antique console tables frequently utilize primary hardwoods like mahogany, paired with secondary timbers such as pine or oak for internal drawer construction. Joinery features hand-cut dovetails, timber veneers, and decorative boxwood or satinwood stringing.

Authentic period pieces display signs of natural age, including minor wood shrinkage, hand-crafted joinery marks, and patinated brass hardware. Inspecting drawer bottoms for hand-planed secondary wood and checking for oxidisation on unfinished surfaces helps confirm age.

Position the table against a neutral wall in an entrance hall or living space to emphasize the wood grain. Pair the furniture with a contemporary mirror mounted above and style the tabletop with ceramic vases, brass lighting, or art books.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece clear of direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme moisture to prevent timber movement, cracking, or veneer lift.
