Patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, Ironstone ceramics was developed as a durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. It gained widespread popularity during the 19th century for its strength, heavy weight, and hand-decorated Chinoiserie patterns.

Ironstone was crafted using ground slag, flint, feldspar, and clay, resulting in a dense, vitreous earthenware that resists chipping. These pieces were decorated using transfer-printed outlines filled in by hand with enamels and glazes.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China. Visually, 19th-century examples exhibit heavy visual weight, fine crazing beneath the glaze, and detailed enamel decoration influenced by Asian motifs.
