Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors were designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Their primary function was to reflect both natural daylight and candlelight, thereby maximizing illumination in formal reception rooms and drawing rooms.

These mirrors typically feature a carved wooden or plaster frame coated in oil or water gilding (gold leaf). The backing is traditionally constructed from solid timber boards, housing silvered glass or mercury-backed mirror plate.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved wood or molded composition detailing, original timber backboards with visible shrinkage lines, and natural oxidisation or dark spots across the silvered glass reflection layer.

Place the mirror directly above a fireplace surround or position it on top of a wide hallway console table to anchor the space. The wide proportion works well to balance contemporary minimalist furnishings with historical texture.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes on gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso grounds.
