Walnut Floral Carved Chair, Attributed to Liberty & Co

19th century
Description

A beautifully carved walnut chair, richly worked with flowing Art Nouveau floral motifs to the back, seat and legs. The exuberant, organic carving — with its large blossoms, curling stems and rhythmic leaf work — is strongly characteristic of designs associated with Liberty & Co.

The walnut has a warm, polished tone that highlights the depth and movement of the carving. The underside retains early pencil markings and a fragment of an original paper label, supporting the Liberty attribution. A decorative and sculptural piece with wonderful presence, ideal as an accent chair or as part of an Art Nouveau interior.

Seat height = 42.5cm (16.7'')

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts seating emphasises traditional craftsmanship, natural timber, and hand-carved decorative elements such as floral motifs and organic forms inspired by nature.

Walnut, oak, and mahogany were frequently selected for carved armchairs due to their dense grain, durability, and suitability for intricate relief carving.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-carved joinery, distinct chisel marks on carved surfaces, age-appropriate patination, and organic decorative motifs popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Positioning a carved wooden armchair as a standalone statement piece in a hallway, bedroom corner, or study creates visual interest and introduces tactile texture to modern minimalist spaces.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the timber and maintain its natural lustre.
