Fine Pair of William & Mary Style Walnut High Back Caned Armchairs, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and decorative pair of William & Mary style walnut framed armchairs, dating to circa 1900, of elegant proportions and excellent colour.

Each chair features a tall shaped back with finely woven cane panels, framed within a beautifully moulded walnut surround. The outscrolled arms terminate in bold scroll handrests, adding a sense of movement and refinement to the design.

The seats are also caned and currently fitted with loose cushions for comfort, which can easily be removed to reveal the original canework beneath. The chairs stand on graceful cabriole front legs with pad feet, united by shaped stretchers, reflecting the influence of late 17th century English design.

The walnut has developed a rich, warm patina, enhancing the depth and character of the grain. The caning shows age-related wear in places (as visible), consistent with use, but remains presentable.

A stylish and comfortable pair, ideal for a drawing room, library or interior designer setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 17th-century England, William and Mary style furniture features tall vertical proportions, intricate wood carving, Dutch and Flemish influences, woven cane panels, and serpentine stretchers connecting decorative legs.

These armchairs are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut or beech, paired with natural rattan cane woven into the backrests and upholstered seat cushions using wool, silk, or cotton fabrics.

Edwardian revival examples from around 1900 display subtle machine-cut joinery, uniform saw marks inside frame joints, late-19th-century finish compositions, and more consistent wear patterns than 17th-century originals.

Positioning a pair of high-back armchairs flanking a hallway console or fireplace creates a formal, balanced focal point, while pairing them with contemporary textiles introduces textural contrast.

Keep walnut frames free of dust using a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly. Lightly mist the underside of natural cane once or twice a year with clean water to prevent brittleness caused by central heating.
