A stylish en plein air view of the town square in Dijon, painted in May 1938.

The painting is titled, dated, and indistinctly signed on the stretcher, and is presented in its original, highly decorative period frame.
Provenance
Purchased at auction in France from a sale featuring a significant collection of works by Lucien Jonas. A copy of the original auction invoice will be provided to the purchaser.

About the Artist
Lucien Hector Jonas enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1899, where he quickly established a reputation as a gifted painter. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1901 and was awarded a silver medal, together with three additional prizes, at the 1905 Salon. That same year, he won second prize in the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome.

During the First World War, Jonas was appointed military painter to the Musée de l'Armée in 1915 before becoming an official painter to the French Navy in 1916. He represented France in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympic Games, and in 1945 was awarded the Médaille d'Honneur by the Salon des Artistes Français in recognition of his distinguished career.

Condition
The painting is in good, sound original condition. The original frame has undergone sympathetic restoration in places.
