Khamseh Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A lively example of a Khamseh tribal rug. The classic design of stepped diamonds joined at the vertical on a field festooned with chickens, flowers and stylised boteh announces its provenance. As does the colour palette, particularly the deep red of the border and pure blue of the main field. I love the alternating black and white minor borders that really jump out the rug. The complex interlocking main border is also pleasing. A very tribal looking rug with soft wool and strong colours.

Fair condition with some wear and a little repair. There is loss to the ends.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Khamseh rugs originate from a confederation of nomadic tribes in southwestern Persia formed in the mid-19th century. Woven primarily by village and tribal weavers, these textiles reflect a rich blending of nomadic traditions, featuring distinct geometric field designs and stylized animal motifs.

Authentic Khamseh rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation warps and wefts. The vibrant hues are achieved through natural vegetable and mineral dyes, including madder root for deep reds and indigo for dark blues.

Authentic pieces typically feature soft woollen foundations, flexible handle, and minor weaver irregularities in symmetry. Key visual identifiers include bird motifs, often referred to as chickens or birds of paradise, geometric diamond medallions, and dense field filler ornaments.

A tribal rug serves as an anchor in both contemporary and classic settings. It pairs effectively with minimalist wooden furniture, neutral leather seating, and brass accents, providing rich texture, historical context, and depth of colour to living rooms or hallways.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling fibres. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional cleaning by an oriental rug specialist is recommended every few years to preserve natural dyes and wool structure.
