Antique Edwardian Mahogany Chess, Card & Games Table C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian mahogany games table, the folding top opens in two parts, to a baize-lined playing surface centred by an inlaid rosewood and satinwood chessboard, supported on four pull-out slides.

The frieze features a single drawer to either side, and an integrated pull-out cribbage board below one drawer. With fine stringing and crossbanding throughout, the piece is raised on slender tapering square legs terminating in original castors.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and use. The original baize remains in place and in good condition. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian games table is a multi-functional item of furniture crafted during the early 20th century, typically featuring convertible, folding, or swivelling tops to reveal playing surfaces for cards, chess, or backgammon.

These tables were constructed primarily from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, frequently decorated with satinwood inlays and lined with wool baize or textured leather.

Authentic Edwardian card tables feature slim proportions, square tapered or turned legs often resting on brass castors, precise marquetry or stringing, and period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails within internal compartments.

An antique games table functions effectively as an occasional side table or corner accent in a living room, drawing room, or study, providing both historic decoration and interactive utility.

Dust the timber regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain, while keeping the baize playing surface protected from direct sunlight, liquids, and abrasive friction.
