Produced predominantly in the early 19th century, Regency papier-mache trays are light, durable, lacquered items often finished with dense japanned backgrounds and detailed hand-painted gold leaf embellishments, reflecting period interest in East Asian lacquerware techniques.

Sheets of paper were saturated with paste, pressed into iron moulds, and baked at high temperatures. The hardened blanks were dipped in linseed oil, coated with black asphaltum varnish, polished, and decorated with gilding or paint.

Authentic Regency examples exhibit fine surface crazing in the varnish, a dense and heavy feel relative to modern paper composites, smooth hand-finished undersides, and subtle wear to the raised gilding along exposed edges.
