Description

This LARGE REGENCY PAPIER MACHE TRAY dates from circa 1830 and measures an impressive 30.25 inches (77 cm) in width..

It retains its original, free-flowing gilt decoration.

The TRAY is in unrestored condition. The photographs show wear to two corners, some old screws to the base edge and ring marks to the top.

An ideal size to be used as a Tray Table.

A Regency papier-mache tray is a decorative household vessel crafted during the early 19th century, constructed from compressed paper sheets saturated with adhesive, heat-cured, and decorated with japanned black lacquer and gilded ornamentation.

Manufactured through a process of pasting paper sheets over moulds, baking them at high temperatures, and polishing them with oil, the resulting lightweight material was finished with multiple coats of black varnish before skilled artisans applied gold leaf detailing.
