19th Century Regency Burr Walnut Centre Table with Secret Drawers, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

An exceptional and highly unusual Regency pedestal centre table, dating from the early 19th century, beautifully embodies the refined neoclassical style of the period. Crafted from richly figured burr walnut, the impressive top displays striking natural grain and is finished with an elegant reeded edge. The frieze conceals two ingenious pull-out secret drawers, virtually invisible when closed, providing the perfect place to discreetly store valuables.

The table is supported by a bold, corkscrew-turned central pedestal, terminating in a distinctive sculptural base. Each leg is finely carved in the form of a mythical hooved foot, an exceptionally rare and characterful feature that distinguishes this table from more conventional Regency examples.

Generously proportioned, it is equally suited for use as a centre table, breakfast table, or small dining table. Combining a beautifully figured burr walnut top, superb craftsmanship, intricate carving, and cleverly concealed storage, it is both practical and visually impressive.

A striking and versatile piece with considerable presence, it would complement both traditional and contemporary interiors. The table remains in good original condition, displaying the expected signs of age and use, together with a rich, deep patina developed over two centuries.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, Regency centre tables are characterised by classical proportions, central pedestal supports, and high-quality wood veneers such as mahogany, rosewood, or burr walnut.

Cabinetmakers of this era utilised solid hard woods alongside highly figured veneers like burr walnut, employing hand-cut dovetail joints, brass fittings, and hand-carved decorative motifs on pedestals and feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished joinery, age-appropriate oxidation on wood surfaces, original brass mechanisms or concealed latches, and distinct turnings or spiral carvings on central pedestals.

Position the table in a spacious entrance hall or living room centre, anchoring it with a sculptural vase, curated art books, or a contemporary pendant light overhead to contrast traditional wood grain with modern elements.

Maintain burr walnut by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, keeping the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting.
