Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian open armchair features exposed wooden arm supports and legs, distinct from fully upholstered armchairs with enclosed sides. Designed for comfortable seating during the 19th century, these chairs incorporated coil springs, deep buttoning, and decorative turned timber elements.

These armchairs were constructed using hardwood frames such as mahogany or walnut. Internal cushioning utilised natural fillings including horsehair, jute webbing, steel coil springs, and brass castors attached to the feet for ease of movement.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned timber supports, stamped brass castors, and sometimes maker marks on the rear leg or frame. Hand-stitched upholstery, deep diamond buttoning, and traditional Mortise and Tenon joinery also signal authentic construction.

Position the armchair alongside a minimalist side table to create a balanced reading nook in a living room or bedroom. The combination of rich turned timber and patterned fabric provides visual warmth and textural contrast within modern or eclectic spaces.

Vacuum the fabric gently using a soft brush attachment to remove dust without pulling threads. Clean the wooden legs with a dry cloth, wax the timber periodically, and position the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators to avoid drying out the frame.
