19th Century Victorian Period Mahogany Hall Stand, C1870

19th century
Description

Elegant Large Scale 19th-Century Victorian Mahogany Hall Stand

An elegant, large scale 19th-century Victorian solid mahogany hat and coat hall stand of fine quality and presence. The central pilaster, with moulded panels and two pegs, is flanked by four splayed, scrolled branches with foliate carving and additional pegs, providing generous hanging space.

Below, a pair of curved umbrella rests are raised on turned supports above a serpentine plinth base, complete with the original painted zinc liner (drip tray) and terminating in bun feet. Retaining its excellent original colour and rich mahogany timber, the stand is fitted with a total of ten turned coat or hat hooks across the four branches and central upright. English, circa 1870.

Structurally sound and in superb original order, this piece is a clear example of top-tier Victorian cabinetmaking. Both a highly practical storage solution and a striking decorative feature, this Victorian mahogany hall stand will enhance any interior that values fine 19th-century craftsmanship, individuality and timeless style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian hall stand is a specialized piece of entryway furniture developed in the 19th century to hold coats, hats, walking sticks, and umbrellas upon entering a home.

These pieces were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring turned wooden pegs and fitted zinc or cast iron drip trays at the base.

Authentic period examples display hand-turned wood joints, original removable metal drip pans, hand-carved scrollwork, and natural signs of age such as oxidation in the timber grain.

Place the piece in an entrance hall or wide foyer alongside neutral contemporary wall finishes to let the rich mahogany tones serve as an architectural focal point.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain while keeping metal drip trays clear of standing moisture.
