Harry Stinton (British, 1882–1968) – Watercolour Painting Landscape

1900 - 1920
Description

Harry Stinton (British, 1882–1968) – Watercolour Landscape with Mill and Figures

English, c.1925

A well-composed early 20th-century English watercolour by Harry Stinton, depicting a peaceful mill scene with children beside a stream and waterfall. The painting is typical of the pastoral themes occasionally explored by Stinton outside his more widely known porcelain work. Signed H. Stinton lower right.

Mounted and glazed in a simple gilt frame with a period card mount. Framer’s label to the reverse: J. Lowe, 19 The Foregate, Worcester, suggesting local provenance and likely framing during the interwar years.

Frame dimensions: 43 x 34.5 cm

Condition: Watercolour in good condition. A few minor surface marks to the frame. Ready to hang.

Declaration

Treasure Trove Worcester Ltd has dated this Antique Watercolour Landscape Painting to the 1920s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British watercolour painting of this era is characterised by subtle tonal glazes, pastoral subjects, and translucent washes on paper, reflecting a tradition of romantic naturalism popularised throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Traditional watercolours consist of water-soluble pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper, typically mounted behind protective glass within a carved or moulded wooden gilt frame.

Collectors examine artist signatures, paper watermarks, layer building techniques, and signs of age such as natural paper toning or minor foxing, along with original framers labels on the backboard.

Hang the artwork as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table, or layer it within a gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings or framed charcoal sketches for modern texture.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity, ensuring UV-protective glass and acid-free archival mounts are used to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation.
