Antique Pair of French Giltwood Bergere Armchairs

A beautiful pair of antique French giltwood bergere armchairs of elegant neoclassical form. These stylish chairs feature finely carved giltwood frames with decorative mouldings, carved rosettes and classical detailing throughout. The shaped backs and sweeping arms create a wonderfully comfortable and inviting seat while the original cane work gives the chairs a light and sophisticated appearance.

The chairs retain their attractive cane backs and cane seats and are accompanied by loose velvet seat cushions in a deep blue tone which complement the rich gilded finish beautifully. The neoclassical styling is evident throughout with fluted uprights, carved ornament and elegant proportions making these chairs equally suitable for a drawing room, bedroom, dressing room or luxury hotel interior.

Bergere chairs became highly fashionable in France during the eighteenth century and remained popular into the nineteenth century, prized for their comfort and refined appearance. Today they remain one of the most sought-after forms of occasional seating.

Good antique condition with age-related wear, marks and rubbing to the gilding consistent with age and use. The cane work remains in good order and the chairs are strong and sturdy. The loose velvet cushions are included.
