Antique French Giltwood Bergère Armchairs Set of 4 Louis Xvi Style Salon Chairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A very elegant set of antique French giltwood bergère armchairs, shaped in the Louis XVI taste with carved frames and soft oval backs. The gilded frames are finely detailed with fluting, acanthus carving and delicate beading, all raised on tapering fluted legs.

The chairs are upholstered in a quality silk damask with classical striping which complements the gilt frames, giving a refined decorative look without being overpowering. The generous padded seats and enclosed arms make these very comfortable chairs, originally designed for formal salons and drawing rooms where comfort and appearance were equally important.

Bergère chairs such as these were made for relaxed seating in grand interiors, often arranged in conversation groups. This is a lovely original set with great presence and a very usable scale.

We are selling these as a set of four. We also have a further four matching chairs available along with a pair of matching stools, allowing the option to create a larger suite if required.

Condition report

The frames are in good solid condition with minor age related wear to the gilding as expected. The upholstery is clean and presentable. Overall a very attractive and ready to use set.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style seating is characterised by neoclassical design principles inspired by classical antiquity, featuring geometric symmetry, straight fluted legs, medallion or rectangular backrests, and carved wooden frames often finished with gold leaf gilding.

These pieces typically feature carved hardwood frames covered in a layer of gesso, which is then overlaid with thin gold leaf through water or oil gilding techniques. Internal seat construction traditionally uses coiled springs, jute webbing, and natural fillings such as horsehair.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery using wooden pegs, subtle irregularities in the gilding layer, age-related wear showing red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf, and historical maker marks or stamps on the frame undersides.

Giltwood chairs are frequently used as contrasting accent pieces alongside modern minimalist sofas, positioned near neutral architectural elements, or arranged as a pair opposite a fireplace to create a formal conversation area.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted using a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, solvents, or water which dissolve traditional gesso and lift gold leaf. Maintaining stable humidity levels prevents wood shrinkage and flaking gilding.
