Antique Turkmen Carpet, Kizyl Ayak Tribe, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

Just in from a private collection, this beautiful small carpet was made by Kizyl Ayak Turkmen in Turkmenistan during the third quarter 19th century.

The carpet, which comprises three vertical columns of Kizyl Ayak 'guls' (tribal crests) and eleven guls in each column, is surrounded by a stylised 'tree' main border. It is interesting to note that within each gul, there appears to show two 'H' symbols in each of the four compartments which we know to represent animal heads. But the heads are missing in all but two guls, seen in one of the detail images.

The carpet is in very good overall condition and is complete with its plain-weave elems both ends.

Size: 2.13 x 1.30m (7' 0" x 4' 3").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Turkmen carpets are traditional hand-knotted floor coverings produced by nomadic tribes across Central Asia, with the Kizyl Ayak sub-group recognised for distinctive repeating octagonal tribal emblems termed guls.

These carpets are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and structural foundation, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic examples feature asymmetrical hand-knotting, minor natural variations in dye batch tone, a dark red or madder background palette, and specific geometric tribal motifs arranged in vertical rows.

A rich red Turkmen carpet anchors contemporary or period living spaces, providing textural depth and geometric structure against polished timber floors or neutral upholstery.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to balance wear, and consult a professional textile restorer for specialised cleaning.
