Khamseh rugs originate from the Khamseh Confederation, a tribal alliance formed in the 19th century in the Fars province of south-western Persia. These hand-woven textiles were crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers, incorporating distinctive geometric patterns, stylized bird motifs, and rich natural dye palettes.

Authentic Khamseh carpets are woven entirely from wool, utilizing locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. The yarn was historically dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for reds and indigo for dark blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction with slight geometric asymmetries, a soft wool foundation rather than cotton, and characteristic motifs such as the chicken or bird motif (morghi). Variations in colour shade, known as abrash, also indicate the use of traditional natural dye batches.
