A fine and most attractive Pair of Late 19th Century Antique Japanese Meiji Period Imari Porcelain Dishes of square form, each dish seated upon a round foot. Softly decorated in a traditional Imari palette of iron red, green and blue together with gilding. The exterior of each dish is decorated with a series of traditional "mon" devices, the interior reserves with a tranquil mountain and lake scene in underglaze blue.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. During the Meiji period (18681912), production expanded to cater to Western demand, featuring underglaze blue brushwork combined with overglaze iron-red, green enamels, and gilded detailing.

Imari wares are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures. The design process involves applying an underglaze cobalt blue pigment, firing the piece, and subsequently adding polychrome overglaze enamels and gold leaf highlights before a secondary lower-temperature firing.

Authentic Meiji pieces display distinctive hand-painted underglaze blue patterns beneath thick enamel overlays. Marks on the base, irregularities in hand-applied gilding, firing spur marks, and natural age wear on unglazed foot rims indicate genuine period manufacture.
