Early 19th Century Mahogany Tray-top Writing Table / Desk, C.1800–1820

18th century
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

Early 19th Century Mahogany Tray-Top Writing Table / Desk

A very attractive early 19th century mahogany tray-top writing table, of elegant proportions and useful scale. The piece has a raised three-sided gallery with shaped side returns and pierced carrying handles, above a polished writing surface and two frieze drawers. The drawer fronts are fitted with particularly good quality brass knob handles with polished mahogany centres, an unusual and refined detail which adds considerably to the character of the piece.

The table has a light, practical form and would work well as a small writing table, dressing table, side table or hall table. The mahogany has a warm, rich colour with attractive figuring throughout, while the shaped tray gallery gives the piece a decorative quality without making it overly formal. The slim square legs and restrained construction give it a clean Regency-period look, making it suitable for both period and more contemporary interiors.

Dimensions:

Width: 100 cm (39 3/8 inches)

Depth: 53.5 cm (21 inches)

Height to tabletop: 77 cm (30 1/4 inches)

Height to top of gallery: 90 cm (35 1/2 inches)

Condition:

In very good, beautifully and sympathetically restored condition. The table is structurally sound and presents very well, with a warm polished mahogany surface, good colour and attractive figuring. There are minor marks, small surface blemishes and signs of age consistent with use, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The drawers run well, and the brass knob handles with polished mahogany centres are a particularly fine and unusual feature.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 19th century, tray-top writing tables became popular for their functional gallery edges, which prevented items from falling off the workspace. These pieces typically feature classical proportions, fine timber veneers, and clean, elegant lines characteristic of the Regency period.

Primary woods were predominantly high-grade West Indian or South American mahogany, valued for its stability and deep colour. Secondary timber, such as pine or oak, was used for drawer linings, while dovetail joints and brass fittings were standard construction elements.

Authentic period desks exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original wood patination, and hand-planed secondary surfaces. Look for signs of age around drawer runners, historical lock hardware, and natural timber shrinkage over time.

Position the table against a neutral wall or near a window to allow the rich mahogany tones to stand out. Complement the warm timber with a contemporary desk lamp, minimalist desk accessories, or pair it with a sleek modern chair for a balanced look.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent warping and fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and preserve its patination.
