Walnut Parquetry, Brass & Mother of Pearl Inlaid Tea Caddy, C.1880

19th century
Description

A late 19th century walnut parquetry, brass and mother of pearl inlaid tea caddy.

The caddy is of unusual design with brass and mother of pearl inlay very much in the art nouveau taste to both the top and escutcheon, contrasting with the crisp parquetry inlay to the front and top. The hinged top opens to reveal two lidded compartments, each lid boasting a tunbridge-style border.

Some light signs of wear commensurate with age but overall the caddy is in a very good condition indeed.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, tea was an expensive imported commodity, prompting households to store dry leaves in lockable wooden boxes or caddies to prevent theft and protect the contents from moisture.

Craftsmen utilised fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently embellished with geometric parquetry, mother-of-pearl inlays, brass escutcheons, and zinc or lead alloy interior linings.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-appropriate brass fittings, natural wear to the base, and original interior lids or lining foil within the compartments.

An antique tea caddy serves as a decorative accent on a sideboard, bookshelf, or console table, offering compact storage for small everyday items.

Dust the surface using a dry, soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the wood finish while avoiding liquid cleaners that could loosen delicate inlays.
