Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg drop-leaf table is a space-saving design where the tabletop expands via hinged leaves supported by pivoting leg frames known as gates. Popularised in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries, these pieces allowed flexible room arrangements in traditional dwellings.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid native timber, such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, joined with wooden dowels and mortise and tenon joinery. Hand-forged iron hinges were typically employed to secure the drop leaves to the fixed central top section.

Authentic 18th-century examples exhibit signs of hand-planed surfaces, irregular peg construction, hand-forged iron hinges, and uneven wear patterns on the foot stretchers. The undersides often display rough-sawn timber marks and natural wood oxidisation consistent with age.

Folded down, the table serves as a compact console or side table against an entry wall or behind a modern sofa. Fully extended, it functions as a dining table that adds warmth and historical texture to contemporary settings.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of clear beeswax protect the timber finish. Protect the surface from direct heat sources, excessive humidity, and standing liquids to prevent wood warping or ring marks.
