Developed in the 17th and 18th centuries, a drop leaf or gateleg table features hinged leaves supported by pivoting legs, allowing the tabletop to expand for dining or fold down to save space in traditional interiors.

These tables were constructed from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods, including hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, wooden pegged construction, and turned baluster or spindle legs.

Authentic period pieces feature irregular hand-sawn markings beneath the top, hand-forged iron butterfly or strap hinges, uneven patination from age, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain that turns oval tops slightly asymmetrical.

Position the table against a wall with the leaves folded down to serve as a console, or open it fully in a dining room paired with minimalist contemporary chairs to contrast period woodwork with clean lines.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiator proximity, clean spills immediately with a dry cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and preserve its existing patina.
