18th Century Oak Drop Leaf Table

18th century
Description

A superb oak drop-leaf table in excellent antique condition. The central rectangular top is flanked by two hinged leaves that rise to form a generous oval surface, allowing the piece to shift effortlessly between compact and extended form of 159.5cm deep. Below the top are two practical pull-out drawers, perfect for storing cutlery or linens. The table stands on beautifully turned barley-twist legs, united by matching stretchers that provide both stability and visual harmony. The oak has matured to a warm, even patina, accentuating the grain and lending the piece a welcoming, time-softened character. A versatile and decorative table, equally at home as a dining piece, occasional table, or hall feature, and a lovely example of traditional English craftsmanship.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century oak drop-leaf table, often designed with a gateleg mechanism, is a space-saving dining or side table with hinged flaps that drop down when not in use.

These tables were hand-crafted using solid oak timber, fitted with peg joints, hand-carved barley-twist or turned legs, iron hinges, and wooden gate supports.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, uneven peg construction, irregular drawer dovetails, authentic oxidisation around iron hardware, and natural shrinkage across wood grain.

Position the table with leaves folded against a wall as a console, or open it in a dining space paired with modern seating to create a balanced contrast of eras.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax polish annually along the grain, avoid direct sunlight or radiators, and use coasters to protect the timber finish.
