Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table is a form of drop-leaf furniture featuring legs hinged to a framework that pivot outward to support extended flaps. Originating in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Britain, these designs provided versatile space-saving solutions for living and dining spaces.

Seventeenth-century gateleg tables were typically constructed using solid oak joined with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs. They feature hand-turned legs, wooden pivot pins or iron hinges, perimeter stretchers for support, and occasionally integrated end drawers.

Authentic period gateleg tables display hand-planed timber surfaces, uneven wear on the stretchers where feet rested, and hand-forged fittings. Look for historical wooden peg construction, hand-saw marks, and natural oxidisation around structural joins.

A gateleg table offers flexible utility as a compact side table or hall console with one leaf down, or fully extended as an eclectic dining table. Pairing dark oak surfaces with modern neutral seating or contemporary ceramics creates a balanced contrast.

Maintain solid oak tables by dusting surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and maintain consistent interior humidity to prevent timber movement.
