A fine and colourful Early 19th Century Antique English Mason's Ironstone Tureen and Cover of octagonal form and small size. Decorated in a typical "Japan" pattern, the cover surmounted by a blue Kylin finial, the underside with the standard blue printed mark of the period viz. MASON'S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA as used from circa 1815.

Patented by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire in 1813, Ironstone china is a durable type of vitreous earthenware developed to compete with imported Chinese porcelain during the Georgian period.

Georgian ironstone was manufactured using a mix of china clay, quartz, feldspar, and ironstone slag, fired at high temperatures to produce a dense, opaque body highly resistant to chipping.

Authentic early pieces often display transfer-printed outlines filled with hand-painted enamel colours in traditional Imari palettes, alongside printed factory marks such as Masons Patent Ironstone China on the base.
