A fine and colourful Early 19th Century Antique English Mason's Ironstone Tureen and Cover of octagonal form and small size. Decorated in a typical "Japan" pattern, the cover surmounted by a blue Kylin finial, the underside with the standard blue printed mark of the period viz. MASON'S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA as used from circa 1815.

Masons ironstone was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England. Developed as a durable and cost-effective alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, it became renowned for its heavy ceramic body and vibrant Imari-inspired patterns.

Georgian ironstone was manufactured using a hard earthenware clay body mixed with slag and flint, fired at high temperatures for strength. Decoration involved a combination of underglaze transfer printing and hand-painted enamel colours.
