19th Century Silver Paste Chandelier Drop Earrings

19th century
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

Romantic 19th-century drop earrings in solid silver with gold wires, set with sparkling hand‑cut paste diamond stones. Each beautifully articulated earring features a graceful openwork design of stylised leaves, culminating in a pear‑shaped drop with a suspended flower cluster.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

SIZE: 5 x 1.4cm.

WEIGHT: 9.5g.

MATERIALS: Silver, gold, paste gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None, the earrings have been tested to confirm they are sterling and nine-carat gold.

CONDITION: In very good antique condition; one tiny paste is vacant, one or two stones have minor chips when seen under magnification but all seem to be original and well matched, with no obvious replacements.

ERA: Estimated late Georgian/early Victorian (c.early-mid 1800s).

Declaration

Corvidae Antique has dated these Silver Paste Drop Earrings to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Paste drop earrings feature hand-cut, high-lead glass stones crafted to simulate the brilliance of diamonds, arranged in articulated chandelier-style metal frameworks popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These pieces typically feature leaded glass paste stones set into silver mounts, often constructed with closed-back settings containing silver or metallic foil to enhance light reflection.

Authentic nineteenth-century paste items often display closed-back silver settings, black dot detailing painted on the culet to simulate depth, and hand-cut faceted stones with minor irregularities.

Chandelier paste earrings serve as an impactful focal point when paired with minimalist evening attire, crisp white tailoring, or modern open-neck dresses.

Paste jewellery must never be submerged in water or liquid cleaner, as moisture destroys the underlying foil; clean gently using a soft, dry polishing cloth.
