Georgian Gold and Silver Black Dot Paste Flower Earrings

18th century
Description

Fantastic rare Georgian paste flower earrings in solid silver, backed with nine-carat rose gold. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgian jewellers would paint a black dot on the bottom end of paste stones (the culet) to help give an illusion of depth and make them look more like real diamonds as they glittered in the candlelight.

• Condition: The earrings are in very good antique condition; when seen under magnification, two of the pastes do not have black dots and are likely later replacements, though they are matching old single cuts and seem to have been in place for a very long time.

• Fixing: Integral nine-carat gold ear wires, supplied with tiny silicone keepers to pop on the ends for security.

• Era: Georgian, c.1714-1837.

• Size: Just over 3cm long (one hangs slightly lower) and approximately 1.5cm wide.

• Weight: 5.8g.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black dot paste refers to eighteenth-century lead glass gems where a small black dot was painted onto the culet or backing foil to simulate the visual depth and open culet of natural diamonds.

Georgian paste items were typically set into silver fronts to maintain a white metal appearance around the clear glass, paired with gold backs and ear wires to prevent skin tarnish.

Authentic period pieces feature closed-back settings, foil liners beneath the glass, era-appropriate ear wire fittings, and hand-cut stones rather than machine-moulded glass.

Historical paste drops offer a subtle sparkle that pairs well with minimalist modern evening wear or tailored suits, adding a classic element to contemporary attire.

Due to the foil-backed closed settings, paste jewellery must never be immersed in water or liquid solvents, as moisture causes the foil to tarnish. Preserve these items by gently wiping them with a dry, soft cloth.
