Japanese Satsuma Small Hanami Bowl, Kyoto, C. 1880–1895

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely decorated Japanese Satsuma small bowl produced in Kyoto during the Meiji period, circa 1880–1895. Executed in traditional ivory-toned crackled earthenware, the bowl represents the refined Kyoto export style admired by Western collectors during the late 19th century.

The delicately lobed form is decorated internally with an elegant Hanami scene showing finely dressed aristocratic figures and attendants beneath flowering trees. The composition is arranged within a fan-shaped reserve surrounded by dense kin-de nanako style gilding and intricate gold dot decoration creating a rich jewelled surface effect.

The restrained balance of the decoration distinguishes the bowl from many later heavily overloaded export Satsuma wares. The painting remains airy and controlled, with unusually refined small-scale figure work and delicate polychrome enamels. The crackled underside bears a painted two-character mark reading 梅山 (Baizan), likely a decorator’s mark.

Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese earthenware featuring a pale, crackle-glazed body decorated with detailed hand-painted enamels and gilt highlights, originating during the late 16th century and expanding significantly during the Meiji period.

Satsuma bowls were crafted from fine earthenware clay fired at low temperatures to produce a soft ivory body with a finely crazed glaze, followed by overglaze enamelling and gilded accents.

Authentic Meiji Satsuma ceramics typically exhibit fine crackle glaze, intricate hand-painted polychrome decoration, soft gilded details, and often feature artist or workshop signatures on the base.

A decorative Satsuma bowl can be displayed as a standalone focal point on a sideboard, bookshelf, or coffee table to introduce texture and historical craftsmanship to contemporary interiors.

Dust the bowl gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth; avoid immersing earthenware in water or using abrasive chemicals, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage overglaze gilding.
