We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware is a distinctive style of Japanese earthenware that originated in Satsuma province during the sixteenth century. It is known for its light cream-coloured body, fine crackle glaze, and polychrome enamel decoration accentuated with elaborate gilding.

Meiji period Satsuma ceramics were crafted from low-fired earthenware clay coated with a transparent lead glaze that produced a finely crackled surface. Decorators used mineral-based polychrome enamels and pure gold leaf or powder paste to paint intricate motifs onto the body.

Authentic pieces generally display an overall fine crackle glaze, meticulous hand-painted details including human figures, landscapes, or flora, and gilding. Many items produced in Kyoto workshops during the Meiji era feature makers marks or Japanese character signatures on the base.

A large Satsuma bowl functions as a focal display piece on a dining table centre, sideboard top, or inside a glass display cabinet. Placing the bowl alongside dark wood surfaces or minimalist shelving allows the detailed polychrome enamels and metallic accents to contrast cleanly.

To protect overglaze enamels and gilding, Satsuma ceramics should be dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft brush. Avoid immersing the bowl in water, using harsh chemical detergents, or applying abrasive cloths, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage delicate painted details.
