Antique Edwardian Mahogany Diminutive Envelope Card Table C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian mahogany envelope card table of diminutive scale, the top swivelling and folding open to reveal four counter wells surrounding a central green baize playing surface, set over a single inlaid frieze drawer and raised on four square legs.

Built to a particularly low form, this piece offers an exceptionally compact footprint that sits perfectly alongside relaxed lower sitting room seating, doubling its surface area when opened and providing a generous, usable surface for cards and entertaining.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear and minor historic veneer repairs to the outer crossbanding. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1910.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An envelope card table is a compact folding table design introduced in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, featuring four triangular leaves that unfold from the centre to expose a felt or baize playing surface.

Edwardian card tables were commonly crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, lined with wool baize playing surfaces, and fitted with brass hinges, swivelling base mechanisms, and carved counter wells.

Authentic Edwardian card tables typically feature slim, square tapering legs, hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, original brass leaf hinges, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

Keep the table folded to serve as an occasional side table or lamp stand in a living room or hallway, expanding the triangular leaves only during game play.

Dust the mahogany regularly with a dry cloth, apply natural beeswax periodically to maintain the wood finish, and keep the table away from direct sunlight to protect the baize lining from fading.
