Mahogany Linen Press Housekeeper's Cupboard

19th century
Description

A large late Victorian flame mahogany veneer cedre linen press or housekeeper's cupboard.

Constructed in richly decorative flame mahogany, the cabinet features an impressive architectural cornice above four panelled doors, with finely carved scroll corbels. The central pair of doors open to reveal the original arrangement of sliding pine linen trays, whilst below sits a bank of four graduated drawers fitted with turned wooden knobs.

The outer cupboards provide additional full-height storage and each incorporates a lower drawer, making the piece exceptionally practical as both a linen press and general storage cabinet.

The quality of the mahogany throughout is particularly striking, displaying dramatic flame figuring across the door panels. Retaining a warm, well-aged patina and much of its original character, this is a handsome and highly functional piece of English Victorian furniture.

£1,500 as it is with missing locks on doors and no rails

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally developed in the eighteenth century, a linen press is a substantial piece of storage furniture featuring a combination of upper cupboard space, often fitted with slides or shelves, and lower drawers designed for storing household linens, clothing, and textiles.

Victorian examples frequently feature solid mahogany frames overlaid with flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, turned timber handles, and decorative carved corbels or arched panel doors supported by pine secondary timber.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit hand-sawn secondary wood drawer linings, period brass or iron locks, natural timber shrinkage around veneered panels, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery rather than uniform machine cuts.

A substantial cupboard serves as a central focal piece in a spacious bedroom, dressing room, or hallway, offering concealed storage for clothing or household items while adding warmth and architectural presence to modern schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the grain once or twice annually, keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting.
