Victorian Antique Ebonised Amboyna Side Table C1870

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A great looking attic find, we have an attractive ebonised table with Amboyna inserts - Amboyna was one of the most sought after woods in the Victorian era…

As mentioned its in “attic find” condition, however charming all the same with its ebonised finish, brass trim and decorative stance. Some trim is missing, the Amboyna top is a little cracked and we have the odd piece missing etc. Saying that, the table is perfectly usable and some would say better in original condition with its historic faults and marks, either way a lovely and quite unusual piece.

A rather handsome 19th century English piece.

Dimensions

Overall: Height 71cm x Width 54cm x Depth 54cm

Top: Diameter: 43cm

Lower Shelf: Height 37cm x Width 20-15cm x Depth 26cm

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian ebonised furniture from the late 19th century reflects the influence of the Aesthetic Movement and Anglo-Japanese styles. Craftspeople stained fine hardwoods black to imitate ebony, often pairing the dark finish with contrasting timber veneers, such as amboyna or walnut, and delicate gilt accents.

These tables were constructed using dense hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or birch treated with dark ebonising dyes or lacquers. Decorative surfaces were frequently inlaid with figure-rich veneers like amboyna burl, framed with brass trim or painted gilt detailing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age-related wear to the ebonised surface, revealing underlying timber grain in handled areas. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-carved turned joinery, period screws, and genuine burr timber character within the veneer rather than synthetic reproductions.

The stark contrast between black ebonised finishes and warm wood veneers allows these tables to serve as focal accent pieces. Place them alongside clean-lined modern seating or within reading nooks to bridge classic historical detail with contemporary minimalism.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid applying harsh solvents or abrasive polishes that could damage the delicate ebonised layer or loosen the veneer, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement.
