Ottoman Inlaid Side Table Attributed to Liberty & Co

19th century
Description

A compact Ottoman side table of characteristic octagonal form. The top is finished in ebony, chequered stringing and inlaid mother of pearl (nacre) banding; the central design beautifully inset with mother of pearl and tughra emblem enclosed in an eight point star. This was a calligraphic insignia or seal of the reigning Sultan. The geometric base is decorated with ebony and square mother of pearl mosaic panels over Moorish arched heads extending to form the eight legs.

Fine condition, with a lovely patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this style features geometric wood construction embellished with intricate Mother-of-Pearl, bone, or contrasting timber inlays, influenced by traditional Middle Eastern craftsmanship and popularised in Western interiors by retailers such as Liberty & Co.

These tables typically feature dense hardwoods such as walnut or ebonised timber, inlaid with iridescent Mother-of-Pearl shell, bone, or fruitwood marquetry arranged in geometric and calligraphic patterns.

Authentic period pieces demonstrate hand-cut inlay elements with slight natural variations, aged timber patina, traditional joinery, and expected wear patterns along the base and top edges.

Position the table as an accent piece alongside upholstered seating or within an entryway, allowing its dark timber and iridescent shell inlay to contrast with clean-lined contemporary decor.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid exposing the piece to direct heat sources or rapid humidity changes, which can cause the wood frame to shift and loosen natural shell inlays.
