Georgian Multi Spiral Air Twist Ale Glass

Description

This is a tall Georgian, English, multi spiral air twist ale glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an extended rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a multi spiral air twist stem with shoulder and medial knops. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.7 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter. The glass is 18.7 cm (7.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of minute unburst bubbles and a tiny white inclusion in the metal of the bowl and a couple of minute white inclusions near in the metal of the foot, all dating from manufacture.

English lead glass weighing in at 205 g. (~ 7 oz.).

Air twist glasses were developed in 18th-century Britain, characterised by internal helical air lines created within the stem during the glassblowing process. Ale glasses from this era feature elongated conical bowls designed to preserve carbonation and foam.

Artisans formed air twists by trapping air pockets in a molten glass gather using pointed tools or moulds, drawing out the stem, and twisting it to create spiral patterns. High-lead flint glass was used to enhance clarity and light refraction.

Authentic pieces generally feature a pontil mark on the base, slight structural asymmetry, micro-bubbles, and natural wear patterns on the foot underside. Additionally, 18th-century lead glass is comparatively heavy and produces a clear ring when tapped softly.
