Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Napoleon III metalwork from mid-nineteenth-century France is defined by rich eclectic revival styles, particularly Rococo and Neo-Classical influences. Pieces frequently feature a striking duo-tone contrast combining dark patinated bronze sculptural figures with mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, bases and fittings.

Nineteenth-century ormolu candlesticks were cast in bronze using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, then chased by hand to refine details. The gilded sections underwent fire-gilding using a gold and mercury amalgam before being assembly-fitted with threaded steel rods to secure separate components.

Authentic pieces display hand-chased surface details, visible casting seams inside hollow components, and threaded assembly rods with period-correct square or hand-cut nuts. Genuine gilding exhibits subtle wear patterns around raised edges and deep, warm tone variations rather than uniform modern electroplating.

Antique ormolu candlesticks serve as elevated focal points on a marble mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a formal dining table. Placing them alongside minimalist contemporary art creates a balanced contrast between historical ornament and modern simplicity.

Clean gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust from intricate relief work. Avoid abrasive chemicals, metal polishes, or water on original gilding and patinas; apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the surface.
