Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu refers to the craft of applying finely ground high-carat gold amalgam to bronze objects, creating a durable and highly reflective gilded surface. This technique was widely utilized for decorative objects, furniture mounts, and candle holders throughout the Rococo and Neoclassical periods.

These pieces were cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax method, followed by hand-chasing to detail the surface motifs. A mercury gilding process was subsequently applied to bond gold to the base metal, resulting in intricate textures and enduring lustre.

Authentic items display evidence of hand-chasing, seam lines from historical casting methods, and thread patterns characteristic of early metalwork on internal rods. The gilding often shows subtle wear, oxidisation, or patina around high-relief areas consistent with age.

They serve as elevated focal accents when arranged symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining table. The metallic finish provides visual warmth and contrast against both dark wood surfaces and modern neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush to prevent build-up in detailed chasing. Avoid abrasive chemicals, liquid polishes, or moisture, which can strip historic gilding and degrade the underlying patina.
