Antique Baluch Ru Korssi, Bahluli Tribe, South Khorassan Province, East Persia.

19th century
Description

Private Collection just acquired.

The 'ru korssi' was a flatweave cover made to decorate the top of the 'mangal' - a wooden frame in the centre of the tent, covered with blankets under which charcoal was burning and where the nomads would sit around with their feet tucked under the blankets, warming themselves.

This beautiful ru korssi was made around 1870-1880 by Bahluli Baluch tribes in southern Khorassan province, eastern Persia and has a plain-weave aubergine ground with symbols highlighted in magenta silk. The main border comprises a series of '8-pointed stars' symbolising protection in fine soumak-weave.

The ru korssi is in very good overall condition bar a minute stain just to the lower-right of the central symbol.

Size: 1.48 x 1.44m (4' 10" x 4' 9").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Ru Korsi is a traditional Persian woven textile historically designed to cover a low wooden warming table called a korsi. These square coverings were crafted by nomadic and village weavers to retain heat while serving as decorative central pieces within the home.

Baluch textiles are typically hand-knotted or woven using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. Weavers utilise natural plant and mineral dyes to produce deep tones such as dark indigo, madder red, aubergine, and dark brown.

Authentic Baluch weaving is characterised by a soft, flexible handle, dark colour palettes, and intricate geometric or floating medallion designs. Look for natural dye variation, wool warps and wefts, and traditional nomadic symbols unique to tribes across East Persia and Afghanistan.

Due to their near-square proportion, Ru Korsi textiles function exceptionally well under coffee tables, as wall hangings, or draped over furniture. Their geometric motifs and muted dark palettes complement contemporary, bohemian, and eclectic interior schemes.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating brush bar to prevent fibre damage. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean, damp cloth, and arrange for professional specialist cleaning every few years to preserve the natural wool fibres.
