Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 17th century, coffers served as the primary storage units in British households for textiles, clothing, and valuables. Often given as marriage chests, these pieces featured hand-carved decorative panels displaying geometric, botanical, or guilloche motifs reflective of regional joinery styles.

Authentic period coffers were constructed from solid native timber, predominantly English oak. They utilized joined frame-and-panel construction secured with wooden trunnels or pegs, relying on mortise and tenon joints rather than metal screws or adhesive.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed surfaces, irregular gouge marks from hand carving, and wooden peg joinery. Oxidation around iron hinges, uneven wear on the base rails, and smooth, natural patination from centuries of handling are primary indicators of age.

A carved oak coffer can function as a anchor piece in an entryway, a coffee table in a living space, or placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage. Contrast the dark, carved timber with clean lines, light linen upholstery, and contemporary artwork.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the coffer away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
