Antique Oak Coffer with Geometric Panelled Front

18th century
Description

A generously proportioned 18th century oak coffer or blanket chest with geometric mouldings to the front panel and the initials HC carved either side of the escutcheon. The coffer has a lovely colour and patina, though has had various repairs over the years, so please read the full description below.

Condition: The coffer has general wear and to the front panel and top, with a degree of loss to the bottom of the front panel. The floor of the coffer has been replaced with pine boards. The back panel appears to have either been repaired at some point, or was originally made with timber left over from something else. There is old woodworm damage in the back which does not appear to be active, but we have treated the coffer against woodworm as a precaution. The rear leg on the left hand side is worn. The hinges are not original. Good and solid overall with a lovely rich colour and patina.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, traditionally constructed from joined timber like oak to store household linens, valuables, and clothing.

Period oak coffers were built using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, often featuring geometric raised mouldings and hand-planed solid oak panels.

Authentic early coffers feature pegged joints, hand-planed timber surfaces, natural shrinkage around oak dowels, original iron hardware, and hand-carved geometric mouldings.

Position the coffer in an entryway or at the foot of a bed as functional storage, pairing dark patinated oak with neutral linen textiles and modern ceramics to balance the timber structure.

Maintain the timber by applying clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the coffer away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement or cracking.
