Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A smokers bow is a traditional low-backed armchair featuring a continuous curved crest rail supported by turned spindles and a solid contoured seat. Originating in 19th-century Britain, these sturdy chairs were frequently utilised in public houses, offices, and smoking rooms throughout the Victorian era.

These chairs were predominantly crafted using native hardwoods such as elm for the thick saddle seat, alongside oak, ash, or beech for the turned spindles, legs, and stretchers. Construction relied on traditional joinery, including wedge-tenon joints for the legs and spindles fitted directly into the solid wood base.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature hand-turned spindles, natural wear around the stretcher rails, and thick adzed or shaped elm seats showing pronounced grain. Look for hand-cut joinery beneath the seat frame and an aged patina that cannot be replicated by modern artificial distressing.

A pair of antique captains chairs works effectively framed beside a console table, situated around a dining table, or placed on either side of a study desk. Their low profile and rich timber tones add historical texture and structure to modern or traditional interior schemes.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly using a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina and nourish the timber. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, shrinkage, or joint loosening.
