Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 19th-century Britain, the smokers bow chairalso known as a captains or tub chairfeatures a low, horseshoe-shaped armrest integrated with a curved crest rail, supported by turned spindles and turned legs designed for functional everyday seating.

These chairs are historically constructed using indigenous English hardwoods, predominantly elm for the solid shaped saddle seat due to its split-resistant grain, with ash or beech utilized for turned spindles, legs, and steam-bent bows.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned spindles with subtle variations, deeply contoured saddle seats, wedge-tenon joinery securing the legs through the seat, and natural surface wear patination around the armrests and stretchers.

A smokers bow chair functions as a desk chair in a home office, placed alongside contemporary furniture to provide historical texture, or positioned in a hallway reading nook.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage or joint loosening.
