Victorian Louis Xv Style Desk

19th century
Description

Now this is something truly striking, it's not every day we come across a piece like this.

A large French style writing desk, beautifully made in the Louis XV taste and finished with elegant gilt bronze mounts throughout.

The curved shaped top features a gilt-tooled leather writing surface, framed by a brass edge, giving the piece both presence and practicality. Below, three generously sized drawers run across the front, each decorated with ornate gilt bronze mounts and delicate foliate marquetry.

The desk stands on graceful cabriole legs with finely cast ormolu mounts to the knees and feet, adding to its overall sense of movement and refinement. The veneered body showcases rich figuring, likely kingwood or a similar exotic timber, arranged in a classic parquetry style.

The leather top shows age-related wear, adding to its character, while the decorative finish has been sympathetically refreshed over the years.

A true statement piece, ideal for a study, retail display, or interior setting where a bold, decorative desk is required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a large French flat-top writing desk that emerged during the 18th century, characterised by curvilinear silhouettes, ornamental brass or bronze mounts, and cabriole legs. During the 19th century, Victorian craftsmen frequently reproduced these designs to satisfy demand for classic French styling.

These desks typically feature fine wood veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or walnut arranged in parquetry or marquetry patterns, often topped with a leather writing surface. They are adorned with cast gilt-bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, which protect structural corners and embellish drawer fronts.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces display hand-carved joinery, heavy cast brass or bronze mounts with detailed chasing, and timber veneer applied over solid oak or pine secondary framing. Additionally, drawers often feature period locks and signs of natural oxidisation on underlying metal fixings.

In modern spaces, a Louis XV style desk serves as a focal point in a home office or library. Contrast its ornate metalwork and warm timber tones with clean-lined contemporary seating, minimal desk accessories, and neutral wall paints.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish. Treat the leather writing surface with specialised leather conditioner, and avoid abrasive polishes on gilt-bronze mounts to maintain their aged patina.
