Regency Mahogany Bergère Library Armchair

19th century
Description

A very elegant Regency period mahogany bergère library armchair of generous proportions, raised on finely turned brass cup castors. The chair features a beautifully shaped frame with sweeping arms and a high gently curved back, all inset with finely woven cane work to the sides, back and seat.

The mahogany has a rich warm colour and attractive figuring throughout, complemented by restrained turned supports to the arms and refined detailing. The flowing silhouette and clean lines are very much in keeping with the sophisticated Regency taste of the early 19th century.

The chair retains its loose upholstered cushions in a pale striped fabric. Whilst not newly upholstered, the fabric remains perfectly serviceable and presents well for everyday use. Equally attractive shown with or without the cushions, the chair reveals the full cane seat beneath.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, a Regency bergere chair features an exposed mahogany frame with woven cane back and side panels, complemented by loose upholstered seat and back cushions.

These chairs are constructed using solid mahogany frames, woven split cane for ventilated support, brass castors, and removable fabric cushions.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, hand-woven cane work, original brass castors on turned legs, and natural patination across the timber surfaces.

Place the chair in a study or quiet corner alongside a side table and floor lamp, pairing traditional mahogany with neutral contemporary upholstery fabrics.

Apply beeswax polish to the mahogany elements, clean the cane panels gently with a damp cloth to maintain flexibility, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources.
