Victorian Mahogany Side Table or Writing Table

19th century
Description

A beautiful Victorian side table or writing table made from richly coloured mahogany, featuring two drawers, shaped and pierced legs united by a central stretcher, with decorative finials to each corner and to the centre of the legs. The drawer fronts are veneered in book-matched flame mahogany and retain their original turned wooden knobs…

Condition: Overall this is in very good condition and has obviously been very well looked after throughout its life. The only notable flaws are a small patch (about the size of a penny) on the top where the finish has been damaged, and the castor is missing from the back of the right leg and has been replaced with a wooden block.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian mahogany writing tables typically feature solid timber construction, detailed turned or carved supports, raised gallery backs, and flame mahogany veneered drawer fronts popular during the nineteenth century.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, frequently utilising hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass castors, and turned timber drawer knobs.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planing, original hand-cut dovetails on drawers, age-related patination, and period-correct hardware such as brass castors or wooden knobs.

Position the table in a hallway or home office paired with a modern desk lamp, minimalist art, or structured ceramics to create a contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary lines.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and harsh chemical cleaners.
